Yes, "Safer Internet Day" is a real thing, and it's actually been around for 12 years. This year, Google again will be commemorating the event by giving away a 2-gigabyte storage bump for their Google Drive cloud service if you simply run through a security checkup.

It's a nice gesture, and it rewards users for being on the safer side of internet security. As a matter of fact, the security checkup might even be more valuable than the 2 free gigabytes in this day and age, but extra storage is always a good thing.

Running the Security Checkup

To get your free extra storage, start by heading to this link (note that the offer is only valid if you run this check on February 9th, but we've found it to work on the 8th and some have reported it being valid for the entire week...YMMV). From here, simply log into your Google account.

After that, you'll have to check your account recovery information. If any of these fields are blank, make sure to fill them out, then click "All done."

Next, you can review your account's recent activity. This page will show you all of the devices and locations that your Google account has logged in from recently, so make sure all of the activity is legit. Click "Something looks wrong" to investigate fishy login attempts, or click "Looks good" to move on.

Now you can check your account permissions. These are any apps, services, or devices that have permission to access certain parts of your Google account. Have a look through the list and remove any unwanted entries, then click "Done."

If you have 2-step verification enabled on your Google account, you'll be able to review those settings at this time.

Once you're done with all of that, though, you'll see this page:

That means you're all set up and ready to go. Congratulations, you've secured your Google account and earned 2 GB of extra Drive storage!

Receiving the Extra Google Drive Storage

With the Security Checkup complete, your free storage is on its way. Google will send you an email to confirm this bonus storage so just sit back and wait.
